Dear Mr. Sull:
I am a Professor (by courtesy) of Electrical Engineering; my
actual home at Stanford is the Computer Science Department. Also
I am not presently active in computer vision; my main activity is the
formalization of common sense knowledge and reasoning ability. Therefore,
I am not in position to be of direct assistance.
The main person at Stanford active in computer vision
is Thomas Binford, who is Professor (Research) in the Computer Science
Department. You could contact him for further information.
Your goal of admission to the Electrical Engineering Department
is reasonable, however. Many of Binford's PhD students are in
that Department. More generally, however, AI is in the Computer
Science Department. The ratio of applicants to admissions is
larger for Computer Science than for Electrical Engineering, but
admission in Computer Science is directly into the PhD program,
while in Electrical Engineering, PhD students are selected from
those who have been through the Master's degree program. I don't
know how it works for people who already have Master's degrees from
somewhere else.
I would suggest a visit to Stanford this Fall for you to
compare your interests with both departments.
\closing
Sincerely,
John McCarthy
